money saving tipsSo far on Couponing With Boys, we’ve discussed ways to save money on everything from smart phone costs to meat to gym memberships (and that’s just in the past two weeks!).

Those are all blog entries worth reading, with advice worth following, but not all advice fits neatly into a single category. That’s what today’s entry is all about – a collection of 10 tips for saving money here, there, and everywhere!

  1. PRACTICE THE 30-DAY RULE – Considering a large purchase? Wait 30 days and see if you still want that item. Chances are, you won’t.
  1. PRACTICE THE 10-SECOND RULE – For smaller purchases, before you buy it, take 10 seconds to ask yourself why you’re buying it and if you really need it. If you can’t answer either question, don’t buy the item.
  1. SHOP WITH A LIST (AND STICK TO IT) – Don’t go grocery shopping without a list. If you do you’ll buy a bunch of stuff you don’t need (and spend money you don’t need to spend).
  1. GET PUSHY WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY – Flip your credit card over, call the number on the back and request (or demand) a lower interest rate. Many times, you’ll get it – and save plenty of money in the long run.
  1. USE YOUR GROCERY STORE FLYER AS A MENU – Plan your week’s meals around the items on sale in your grocery store flyer. You’ll save tons and it’ll give you inspiration for meals you might not have considered before.
  1. START A GARDEN – Gardening not only saves money on produce, it’s also a fun way to pass the time on weekends and bond with your family.
  1. CANCEL UNUSED CLUB MEMBERSHIPS – Are you paying dues at gyms and country clubs and not using them? Cancel them. If you want to use them again in six months, you can always rejoin.
  1. BUY GENERIC – We’ve said it before and every deal hunter knows it, but this is a no-brainer. Get over your “generic doesn’t taste as good” fears – in most cases, that’s just plain false – and start saving money today
  1. BROWN BAG IT – Packing your own lunch at work will not only save money, it’ll also save calories. That’s what they call a win-win.
  1. IF IT’S BROKE, FIX IT YOURSELF – Before you instinctively call a plumber, electrician or handy man, try fixing that broken (fill in the blank) yourself. Need some help? Google and how-to YouTube videos are wonderful things.
